FGY - Rains come. Rains go. At times the weather takes away any hope you had for a luscious green grassy carpet too, right?
But why does some grass hold up better than others in drought conditions? Well, there are several factors that account for why some have more drought resistant grass than others.
Turf that does well all comes down to growing the right grass for your area. Which might just reduce the amount of water youd have to lavish on your thirsty turf.
Lets assume you live where long hot dry summers occur more often than not. Instead of coming up with a better sprinkler system maybe planting a more drought resistant grass species would be best. For instance St Augustine, Bermuda or Zoysia. A variety that could lead to a more drought tolerant lawn.
When you water do so early in the day. There is less wind to affect your sprinkler for one. And cooler temperatures and less sunlight means less water would evaporate before soaking in.
Its better to water longer but less often. Since doing so encourages deep root growth. Deep roots can tap moisture in the earth better than shallow ones. Giving you more drought resistant grass.
Don't cut your grass too short. How come? Doing so encourages a shallow root system. Leaving your lawn exposed to drought. And dont take your mowers word for it. Make sure the setting is right by determining how high the blade is from the drive.
Then too you want to feed constantly. Just not how youd think. Do not bag your clippings. Doing so robs your grass of a valuable source of nitrogen. While leaving those clippings can cut your lawns need for fertilizer by as much as a third.
Dont just focus on nitrogen feeding. Phosphates applied in the spring or fall will stimulate root growth too.
Which again gives your lawn a better chance of coming through a dry spell in better shape. Another way to develop more drought resistant grass.
Follow these simple steps and you just may develop your best lawn ever. With drought resistant grass thats ready for whatever the summer has in store.
